Thomas Tommy H. Adkins, Kingsport, TN, passed away Wednesday afternoon October 27, 2010 at his home following an extended illness.
Tommy was born in Jamestown, TN. He resided in Detroit, MI until 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on one of the first LCT landing at Normandy Beach. He served in the Navy till 1946.
In 1950 he came to Kingsport where he worked at the Kingsport Press until 1958. He then became a realtor until his retirement.
Tommy was a member of Northeast Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphea and James W. Adkins, brother, Byron, sisters, Geraldine Taylor and Maxine Elmore.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Helen Rush Adkins, of the home; daughters, Deborah Bottomlee, Blountville, TN; Belinda Martin, Kingsport, TN; and Jill Hurst, Atlanta, GA; granddaughters, Kristie Johnson, Kingsport, TN; and Jenna Buckles, Atlanta, GA; brother, Kenneth, Jamestown, TN; and sister, Hallie Elmore, Crossville, TN.
The family will receive friends 1-2:00 p.m. Saturday Oct. 30, 2010 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Craig Cottongim officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites by American Legion Posts #3/265.
