Thomas V. Hammock, age 83, of Kingsport died Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at his home.
A lifelong resident of Kingsport, he graduated from Dobyns-Bennett in 1949 and entered Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. He graduated with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree in 1953 and entered the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. While at Tech, he was an officer in Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity and played in the Georgia Tech marching band for four years. He was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band fraternity.
He served in Japan during the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of Captain. He was a charter member of the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra and a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church where he was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Ridgefields Country Club. He retired as a Senior Chemical Engineer from Eastman Chemical Co. after 43 years of service. He enjoyed travel, and with his wife Patsy, made several trips to Europe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, D.V. Hammock and Flora W. Hammock; a sister, Joyce Tetrick; and granddaughter, Kaylor Lindsey Reid.
He is survived by his wife Patsy; three children, Peggy Reid and husband, Roger of Atlanta, GA, Kathy Phlegar and husband, Sam of Charleston, SC, and Thomas Hammock Jr. and wife, Lumie of Virginia Beach, VA; and his eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 12 to 2:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Green and Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
