Thomas F. Still, 83, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Born in Kingsport on April 9, 1929, he had lived most of his life here. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and Oberlin College with a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Music with a major in piano performance. While serving in the United States Army he was stationed in Japan. His passion in life was music, particularly the piano. Over his lifetime, he studied in New York City, performed as a solo pianist with the Kingsport Symphony and frequently gave solo recitals.
He was an assistant professor of piano at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. After moving back to Kingsport, he taught piano lessons and worked part time in the family business. In the early 1970's he retired from teaching and worked full time at Still Transfer, serving as vice-president until retirement. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and son.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas S. Still and Rachel Marshall Still, and sister, Melba Still Gilliam.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy Still; two sons, Kent Still of Atlanta, GA and Alan Still and wife, Ann of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Joshua Still, Marshall Still and Ella Still; brother, Gene Still and wife, Mary Sue; nieces, Dona Gilliam, and Vanessa Lawhon and husband, Pres; and nephew, Randy Still.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 3rd from 6-8:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, November 4th at 2:00 pm at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Mickey Rainwater and Rev. Jack Weikel officiating.
Burial will follow the service at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to express a special thank you to some very special people who helped care for him over the last few years, Todd Cope, Kay Elkins, Linda Cornett and Audrey Miller.
Also a special thank you to the staff of Asbury Nursing Home, especially the Magnolia wing staff, and to Dr. Funke and his nursing staff.
