Trixie Stringer, age 92, died April 21, 2017 at 3:30 am at Preston Place Assisted Living. She was born June 21, 1924 in Greene County, TN. Trixie was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport, where she served in many capacities, among them, singing in the Sanctuary Choir, Sounds of Joy Choir, visiting new members and visitors, UMW, children's Sunday School teacher (at First Methodist) and volunteering for 15 years with Holston Valley Community Hospital as Pink Lady in practically every capacity. Trixie spent her youth in Greene County where she started school (called "Primer" in those days) at the age of 4 years old. She graduated from Chuckey High School at age 16, third in her class. At age 17, she completed Business College-Greeneville School of Commerce, a 12 month course of study which she completed in 6 months and was immediately hired as secretary to the office manager for Fraser Brace Engineering Co. for the project of building Holston Ordinance Works, which was completed 2 ½ years later.
At age 20, Trixie was hired by Kingsport's Water Department on December 12, 1944 where she spent her career, progressing to Billing and Customer Service Supervisor for the Water Dept. She enjoyed a 44 year career there, retiring on December 18, 1988, after being given the "Key to the City" and many other awards for service excellence.
Trixie married Charles D. Stringer on March 22, 1975. They enjoyed 29 happy years of marriage until Charles' death in 2004 of prostate cancer. They were devoted to their church and its many outreach ministries. Trixie had more friends than you could count and, to her, friendship and sharing love and encouragement with people was her pure delight in life.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Charles D. Stringer, her parents, Pearl and Robert Bowlin, brother, Robert Bowlin and sister, Mildred Slagle.
Surviving are nieces, Linda Rorex and husband, Dennis, of Elkton, MD, Pat Ritter, of Henderson, NV and nephew, Bobby Slagle, of Northeast, MD; 4 great nieces, Sarah Hartsock, Kim Park, Keri Meadows and Moreen Altimus; 4 great-great nieces/nephews, Sydney Hartsock, Logan and Delaney, Cooper Altimus and several cousins; 3 step-children, Hal Stringer, Plano, TX, Patricia Stringer and husband Lewis Leonard, Savannah, GA and Claire Stringer Rivera and husband Jim Rivera of Canton, GA; 5 grand-children, Jeff Stringer of Huntley, IL, Chris Stringer, of Frisco, TX, Gabriel Leonard, Savannah, GA, Todd Costanzo, Marietta, GA and Holly Costanzo, Atlanta, GA; 6 great grand children, Jordan, Madison and Ethan Stringer, Logan and Collin Stringer, and Ethan Leonard.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. The memorial service will be held at noon at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Green, The Rev. Jack P. Weikel and Rev. Jim Pollock officiating.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Sorrell, Kevin Whitaker, Scott Reynolds, Donnie Byrd, James Shelton, Danny Howe, Freddie Howe and Quinton Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Dexter, Glen Gott, Roger Hanz, Jim Harris and Ron Winter.
