Ula A. "Red" Carter, 78, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a heart attack and surgery on Tuesday.
Born in Greene County, he lived most of his life in Kingsport and retired after 34 years of service with Mason Dixon Truck Lines.
Ula was a member of Lynn Garden Evangelical Methodist Church. Ula was a loving, dear and devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Willie Carter; brothers, Oscar, H. L., Harold, and Bob Carter; sisters, Ruth Toliver and Naomi Chase; niece, Karen Kesterson; and great-niece, Dee Dee Morrison.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Martha W. Carter of the home; two sons, Larry Carter, Kingsport and Kevin Carter, St. Augustine, FL; three stepsons, Mike Wells and wife Lisa of Bristol, VA, Steve Wells and wife Kathy of Louisville, KY, and Phil Wells and wife Linda "Susie" of Gray, TN; two grandchildren, Michael and Erin; two great-grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren with "special step-grandson", Alex; four step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Kesterson and Bill Frazier of Sun City Center, FL; two brothers, Paul Carter and wife Judy of Albany, OH, and David Carter and wife Janice of Morristown, TN; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-neices and great-great-nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday June 19, 2008 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Robert "Buddy" Legg officiating.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home to go in procession.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
