Valice Irene Hawkins, 99, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Baysmont of Asbury Place of Kingsport.
She was born January 7, 1914, in Scott County, VA, to the late Nathan G. Hawkins and Lelia S. Hawkins.
A graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, Miss Hawkins attended Whitney Business College and retired from Arcata Graphics, formerly Kingsport Press, after 41 years as secretary to the supervisor of the Printing Division. She volunteered her service to her country in a nursing capacity during WWII.
She was a dedicated member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church and the UMW Erma Slaughter Circle.
A member of the Liberty Chapter #198 of the Eastern Star and the Kingsport Business and Professional Women's Club, her contributions were extensive. In 2002 and 2003 she was honored by the BPW for her service, and as Woman of the Year 2004, at that time an active member for over 62 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruby H. Blair (Mrs. Robert L.), her sister, Bernice H. G'fellers (Mrs. Philip), infant sister, Osa Hawkins, a brother, Robert Beecher Hawkins, an infant brother, sister-in-law Bertie Hawkins, nephew Gary W. G'fellers, and beloved nephew, Robert L. Blair, Jr.
She is survived by nieces, Marcelena Roberts, Trula Simmons, a dedicated niece, Janice Williams, nephew, Robert B. Hawkins, Jr., cousin, Theada Witherspoon, several great-nieces, great-nephews, and special nephew-in-law, George P. Williams.
She will be deeply missed by her extended family and many friends. Special appreciation is extended to Asbury Place at Baysmont, to each of the highly caring staff whose efforts kept her comfortable during the last phase of her life.
The family will receive friends at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert E. Burlingham, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert B. Hawkins, Stanley Roberts, Robert Simmons, Blair Williams, Neal Blair, Charles Hawkins, George P. Williams, George Witherspoon, Erma Slaughter Circle and her extended family and many friends.
In lieu of floral memorials, contributions may be made to Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, POB 6027, Kingsport TN 37663.
