Velma Mae Hammonds, 88, Kingsport, went to be with her Lord on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Hammonds resided in Kingsport her entire life. Velma was a charter member of West Kingsport Church of God and attended Weber City Church of God. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, James Carl Hammonds; grandparents, James and Nora Harkleroad; and mother, Bonnie Harkleroad Johnson.
Velma is survived by daughters, Nancy Bland and husband, Wayne of Church Hill, Leona McCracken and husband, James, Shirley Yates and husband, Rev. Bob Yates, and Barbara Kilgore and husband, David, all of Kingsport; granddaughters, Angela McCracken Vaughn, Felicia Bland Carter, Susan Bland Courtney, Mary Ellen Kilgore Jessee, and Davina Kilgore; grandsons, James McCracken, Chad Yates, Richard Yates, Nicholas Bland, and Daniel Kilgore; great-grandchildren, Savannah Sprinkle and Amanda Vaughn, Kasey Wolfe, Kory and Kelly Carter, Kaitlyn and Joseph (Lake) Courtney, Daisy and Benjamin Jessee, Gabriel and Isabella Crawford, Chelsie Hughes and James (Dylan) McCracken, Cachetyn and Ephraim Yates, Madison and Mackenzie Yates, and Jade and Zoey Bland; great-great-grandson, Connor Hughes; special cousin she loved like a brother, Bob Law and wife, Bobbi; cousins, Frances Keso, Deloris UptheGrove and Paul Upchurch; and special family friend, Melissa Showman.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 pm with Pastor Raymond Hammonds and Rev. Bob Yates. Special music will be provided by Savannah Sprinkle, Amanda Vaughn and Dennis Linkous.
The graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10:00 and then proceed to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, great-granddaughters and her great-great-grandson.
