Vera Alice Wilson Harris, 95, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday April 9th 2013 at Baysmont Health South Center Kingsport, TN.
Vera was born in Old Butler, TN on May 25, 1917 to Fred and Sally Bowman Wilson and had lived her life in the Kingsport area. Her love for Old Butler was expressed by her memories and frequent returns to the area. She graduated from Watauga Academy Butler, TN class of 1934. Vera went to work in sales for the Montgomery Ward Company in Kingsport.
During World War II she served her country by working in the Newport News, VA shipyard in the welding department. She returned to the Kingsport area to become a nurse at Holston Valley Community Hospital Kingsport, TN for 28 years.
Vera was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Kingsport, TN. After retirement, she served her community with Meals on Wheels and other volunteer activities.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Burton Wright Harris; her daughter, Mary Alice "Sandy" Harris Bullen; brothers Earl Wilson, Ray Wilson, Bob Wilson, Fred Wilson, Jr., Haskell "Hack" Wilson, Jack Wilson, Horace Wilson; and her sisters, Beulah "Bill" Hulse and Ina Laws.
She is survived by her grandsons D. Benjamin Bullen, JD, his wife Karissa of Mendota, VA, Daryll Bullen, MD of Gainesville, FL; and son-in-law, Dale Bullen. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special relationship with her niece Teddy Kilbourne Blann and her husband Larry Blann of Big Stone Gap, VA.
Vera was a collector of unusual socks which she wore every day and she expressed her love to family members and friends by making and giving beautiful quilts, cross-stitching, basket weaving, candy making, jams, and other crafts. The family wishes to express gratitude to the professional and nursing staff at Baysmont for their compassion and care for her during her 14 years while living there.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at First Baptist Church, 200 W Church Circle, Kingsport, TN. Funeral services will continue at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
