Victor Alonzo Cornell, 99, entered Heavenly Rest on Thursday, November 1 at Netherland Healthcare. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was born on April 13, 1908 on his family?s farm in Mecosta, MI to Benjamin and Mary Ann Cornell. After attending High School in Lansing, MI, Victor began working for Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit. Early in his working career, he learned how to play golf. This led to one of his life-long passions. He was able to play golf until his 97th birthday!
During WW II, Vic took a Purchasing job with the Rolls Royce Company, which established a plant in Detroit to produce aircraft engine parts for shipment to their plants in England. Following the war, Victor took a job as Buyer with the General Tire & Rubber Company in Wabash, IN.
In 1950, he was offered the position of Purchasing Agent at a plant in Jeanette, PA, which had been recently purchased by General Tire. After three years in Pennsylvania, the family relocated to Marion, IN, where Victor became the Purchasing Manager for a new General Tire plant. Vic retired in 1971, and he and his wife relocated to Lake Placid, Florida. They also purchased a cottage on Christian Island in Georgian Bay, Ontario, where they spent many happy summers, pursuing Vic?s other passion, fishing. In 1986, Vic and Margaret moved to Baysmont Retirement Center in Kingsport in order to be near family.
Victor married the former Margaret Sutherland on August 21, 1937. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this summer.
Victor is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; sons Thomas Cornell and his wife, Leelia, Greentown, IN; James Cornell and his wife, Lee, Kingsport; and Robert Cornell and his wife, Marna, Pasadena, CA; grandchildren Ellen Figura and husband Joe, Bozeman, MT; Kevin Cornell and wife Olivia, Logansport, IN; Craig Cornell and wife Rachel, Corinth, TX; Brian Cornell and wife Katherine, Gastonia, NC; Susan Cleveland and husband Chris, Richmond, VA; Brooke Roberts and husband Paul, Brunswick, GA; Josh Cornell and wife Lee Ann, Alhambra, CA, Annalisa Lopez and husband Justin, Long Beach, CA; and nine great grandchildren, with more coming!
