?Miss Collins? went to be with the Lord Friday, April 13, 2007.
She was born November 20, 1918, in Kingsport to Thomas Gordon and Grace Walters Collins, their eldest daughter. She lived most of her life in Kingsport and attended Jackson Elementary and Dobyns-Bennett High School. Miss Collins received her B. A. Degree from the University of Alabama Roll Tide! and her Masters from Northwestern University. Sororities included Alpha Lambda Delta, Eta Sigma Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Pi Lambda Theta. She taught in the Kingsport School System for 45 years, retiring in 1983. Her school children were the pride of her life, and many of them came back to see ?Miss Collins? and tell her how she influenced their life. She knew their names and usually what they were doing with their lives.
She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy, United Daughters of the Revolutionary War, and a charter member of the Netherland Family Society.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Marguerite McAbee; a brother, Alfred Collins; and her niece, Sarah Ann Collins.
Surviving are her two nephews, David L. McAbee, Jr. and his wife, Marsha, and George G. McAbee, all of Oklahoma City, OK; a sister-in-law, Georgia Collins, Kingsport; great-niece, Heather Ann Adkins; and great-nephew, David L. McAbee, III, both of Oklahoma City.
The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. John Brewster officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
