Virginia Ruth Hicks, 77, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 31, 2008, at the home of her daughter following an extended illness, joining her husband Sam in Heaven.
Born in Scott County, VA, she had resided most of her life in Kingsport and retired from the Kingsport Press. She enjoyed quilting and cooking for her family.
Mrs. Hicks was a member of Belvue Christian Church.
In addition to her husband, Sam Martin Hicks, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mitchell Roy McGill; granddaughter, Lisa Kaye McGill; and parents, Roby Johnston and Flora Dell Putnam.
Surviving are two daughters, Debra Lawson and husband Gary of Rogersville, and Linda McGill of Kingsport; two grandsons, Christopher Martin Lawson of Rogersville and Jeffrey Lawson and wife Janete of Fredericksburg, VA; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Martin Lawson, Cora Manis Lawson, and Madelynn Ciara Lawson; one brother, Tommy J. Johnston and wife Barbara of Kingsport; and two special friends, Helen Boyd and Jane Roberts, both of Kingsport.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Services will follow at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Dr. John Owston and James D. Saunders, Minister officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Warriors Path Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
