Virginia (Jenny) Woodruff Meade, 91, Kingsport, TN, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Brookdale Senior Living. She was born on April 5, 1928 in Cranberry, NC to the late Charles M. and Kathleen (Collins) Woodruff, Jenny attended school in Johnson City, TN, graduating from Science Hill High School in 1947. She was an accomplished seamstress and tailor, making draperies and altering clothing for many years. She last worked for Park’s Belk doing alterations, until retiring in her early 70’s.
For more than fifteen years she was very active with the Kingsport Senior Center where she made many close friends. She also enjoyed working and participating in Kingsport Funfest. Her favorite activity was dancing, which she often did two or three nights a week until her health declined. For many years Jenny was an active member and sang in the choir at Pleasant View Baptist Church. When not attending church there, she attended church with Sandra’s family at St. Matthew United Methodist Church or Celebration Church.
Three and a half years ago Jenny moved to Brookdale Senior Living on John B. Dennis Hwy where she made many friends among both residents and staff. She especially loved the interaction with all the staff that so lovingly cared for and attended to her.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Eugene Meade; her sisters, Mary Bernstein, Frances Strickler and Margaret Brownell Harrell; and brothers, Woodrow Woodruff and Ernest Woodruff.
Jenny is survived by her daughter, Sandra Poe and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Charles T. (Charley) Poe and wife, Alexia of Nashville, Ashley S. Davis and husband, Nathan of Kingsport, and Andrew D. Poe and wife, Alisa of Rogersville; great-grandchildren, Ella Meade Poe and Charles Thomas Poe of Nashville, Liam M. Davis and Houston P. Davis of Kingsport, and Emma V. Poe of Rogersville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, January 10, 2020 at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday at First Baptist Church of Kingsport. The family will receive friends in the atrium at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Brookdale Kingsport, Virginia Meade Memorial Fund, Attn: Kathy, 2424 N. John B. Dennis Hwy, Kingsport, TN 37660. Those contributions will be shared by the staff who so lovingly cared for Jenny.
