Virginia Rivers, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Friday April 23, 2010 after a courageous battle with ALS Lou Gherig's disease.
She was born and raised in Southwest Virginia. For the past 25 years, she made her home in Kingsport. She was an active member of Beulah Baptist Church and a former member of Kendrick Creek United Methodist Church. Virginia was a very active member of the Senior Citizen's group, and a former Grand Matron of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl F. Rivers, Jr.; parents, Ulus and Lema Massingill; and two brothers, William "Buck" Massingill and Bobby "Toby" Massingill.
Surviving are her two sons, Jerry Rivers and wife, Christine, Mocksville, NC, and Danny Rivers, Kingsport; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Al South officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Stan Lewis at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
