Virginia D. Scott, of Kingsport, joined her heavenly family on November 13, 2012, following a brief illness. She was born October 11, 1919 in Appalachia, VA to Archie Q. and Mary A. Dougherty. She was the class Valedictorian at Appalachia High School in 1937, a graduate of Mary Washington College with a BA in Education, June 1941. She enjoyed playing basketball and tennis while in college. She married Joseph Scott in August, 1943, before he left for Europe, serving in the US Army during the invasion and liberation of France and Belgium. While her husband served in Europe, she worked with her father at the Virginia Wholesale in Appalachia. The Scott's originally lived in Appalachia before relocating to Kingsport, TN in the early 1950's then moved to Cayce, SC in 1976. They were members of the Cayce United Methodist Church. After Joseph passed away in 2007, Virginia relocated back to Kingsport and remained a resident of Emeritus at Kingsport until she was recently hospitalized.
Virginia recently discovered the Irish ancestry of her great-great-grandfather, James Dougherty, born in 1771, who settled in Scott County, VA around 1800 and maintained a farm on Valley Creek. He had immigrated from Iskaheen, County Donegal, Ireland sometime before 1790 and married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, a Revolutionary Patriot in Botetourt Co., VA in 1799. James was a well known hatter in Scott and Tazewell Counties in VA. It was recently discovered James' father was Sean Dougherty and mother was Nancy McColgan and his grandfather was Seamus o'Dochartaigh of County Donegal, Ireland.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Joseph Scott; father, Archie Q. Dougherty; mother, Mary A. Strong Dougherty; sisters, Emma Dougherty Leiffer and Mary Alice; brothers, Frances Marion and John Everett; nephew, Martin D. Winstead, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Janie Bennett of Kingsport; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sherry Scott of Knoxville; grandchildren, Melissa and husband Brian Brown of Gray, TN, Tyler and wife, Katrinda Scott, of Lexington, SC, Michael Bennett of San Antonio, TX, and Nik and wife, Mary Scott of Front Royal, VA; great-grandchildren, Austyn Brown, Teran Scott, Courteney Brown, Turner Scott and Taylor Bennett.
A graveside service will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion Cemetery, Powell Valley Road, in Big Stone Gap, VA with Sam Green officiating. Following the service there will be a gathering of friends in Big Stone Gap. The family will also receive friends any time at the home of her daughter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler Scott, Nik Scott, Michael Bennett, Brian Brown and Austyn Brown.
