Vivian Berneta Carlson Mapes, 103, Kingsport, TN, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24, 2014.
Vivian was born in Stromsburg, NE, and graduated from North Platte High School in 1927. After marrying Donald Mapes, they resided in California for 60 years. After high school, she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone. During World War II she worked at Cal Ship Building in Long Beach, CA. The company built Liberty ships during that time. She relocated to Kingsport, TN, residing with her daughter after the death of her husband.
She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening. Vivian always showed an interest in her family members, especially those who have served or are currently serving in the military.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Emma Carlson; two brothers, LaClare and DeVere; and one sister, Avis Dunlavy.
Vivian is survived by two loving daughters, Sandra Mortenson and husband, DeWayne of Kingsport, TN, and Susan Oswald and husband, John of New Providence, NJ; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thanks to Amedysis Hospice and their caregivers who provided comfort and support during the last days of Vivian's life. The family would also like to thank Dr. Peter Platzer for providing medical treatment over the years. Also thanks to Rev. Steve Counts of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, for his visits and providing support to the family.
Vivian will be buried next to her deceased husband in California.
