WALTER D. TURNER "TRUCK" the son of the late George Robert Turner and Kedith Kane.
Born 23 September 1948 and exchanged his cross for a crown on 1 September 2017. Walter attended elementary and high school in Gate City, VA.
He joined the US Army in 1968 and upheld the Army slogan "Be all you can be" and retired at the rank of Sergeant Major in 1997.
SGM Turner had a way of making everyone feels like he/she was somebody special. He was loved and respected by the military, his family, and friends. After retiring from the Army, he knew his work was not done. Giving 20 years as the Supervisor of the Gallery Attendants at the St Louis Art Museum he became their "Foundation" that kept everything together. Mr. Turner they called him because he was highly respected by all.
Walter leaves to cherish his legacy; his ex-wife Diann Turner, two daughters, Dyanna Jones and husband DeWayne, and Darlene Turner; grandchildren, Totyana Mercado and husband Marcus, Taniya Jones, DeWayne Jones Jr, and Christopher Delaney Hall; great-granddaughter Kyla Mercado. Sisters, Gladys Stacey and husband Buster and Sarah Mack (Susie); brother, George Turner (Punky); and cousin, Ricky Shoemaker; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, and a special couple Walter and Ethel Nock of Fayetteville, NC.
He is preceded in death by his brother Calvin Turner and sister Wilma Turner in 2015.
The family will receive friends from 10am till 12noon Friday (September 8th, 2017) at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12 noon with Rev. Rochelle Maxwell officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30pm Friday at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by the American Legion Post 3/265.
