Walter George Maleski

Walter George Maleski, age 94, of Kingsport, Tennessee and Royalton, Illinois, died on Thursday, August 06, 2009. He was born on December 15, 1914 to John and Antonia Wisniewski Maleski in Royalton.

On June 6, 1938 he married Villia Bondi of Royalton, Illinois, who preceded him in death in December, 1982. On December 31, 1983 he married Delores Schneider of Royalton, Illinois, who preceded him in death in June, 1988. Walter was a World War II veteran, serving as a machine gunner in the Navy in the South Pacific. He worked for 35 years as an Operator at the Lever Brothers plant in Hammond, Indiana, retiring in 1979. He played baseball for Lever Brothers in an Industrial league, both before and after his military service. He was a member of St Aloysius Royalton and St. Dominic's Kingsport Catholic Churches.

An ex-minor leaguer, Walter loved watching baseball in person and on TV. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was known for his kindness and generosity. Most of what he grew or caught, he gave away to friends and relatives. He walked with the Lord, and read his Bible every morning while eating his favorite brand of chocolate donut. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, including his Pinochle pals in Southern Illinois.

He is survived by loving son Robert Diane Maleski, of Kingsport, loving step-daughter Sharon Schneider of Royalton, and loving step-son Henry Gail Schneider of Chicago, Ilinois; sister Mamie late Edward Kasperski of Saint Louis, Missouri, grandchildren Kimberle Ewoud Swaak of Atlanta Georgia and Mark Tracy Maleski of Herndon, Virginia; step-grandchildren Kyle Schneider of Chicago, Illinois , Eric Shari and Peter Amanda Lane, both of Southern Illinois; great-grandchildren Danielle and Gabriela Maleski of Herndon, Virginia, Evan and Isabella Swaak of Atlanta, Georgia; step-great grandchildren Glen, Cameron, and Lauren Lane of Southern Illinois; brother-in-law Robert Rita Bondi and sister-in-law Anna late Delmo Bondi both of Whiting Indiana, sister-in-law Geraldine late James Maleski of Heron, Illinois, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by brothers Stanley, James, and Joseph, sister Josephine, and step-daughter Diana Lynn Lane.

The family will receive friends from 4 - 6 pm Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 6 pm with Father Mike Nolan officiating. Burial will be at the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Royalton, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Memorial donations be made to either Volunteer Services at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN, 27684 or to Catholic Charities of East Tennessee, 3009 Lake Brook Boulevard, Knoxville TN 37909.
