Wayne Thomas Nelson, 75, Blountville, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2025. Wayne was born on January 4, 1950, to the late Hedrick Thomas and Ada Camper Nelson. After graduating Class of 1968 from Blountville High School, he attended classes at ETSU. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1970, fighting proudly in Vietnam alongside his comrades. Wayne held active-duty status until 1974 when he would transition to the reserves; he attained the title of veteran in 1976. Wayne earned the rank of Sergeant and was awarded The Air Force Commendation Medal for his commendable service. In 1974 Wayne went to work for Eastman Chemical Company as a machinist. He officially retired from the company in 2004. Wayne enjoyed spending his free time traveling and was known for his love of drag racing. He was a record holder for the International Hot Rod Association in 1980. Wayne will be deeply missed by his family, friends and loved ones.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Hedrick Thomas and Ada Camper Nelson and sister, Shirley Stinson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Alan Nelson (Amy L.); daughter, Amy M. Nelson; significant other, Michelle Welch; grandchildren, Adam Nelson, Austin Nelson and Garret Weaver and nephews, Jeff Stinson, Mike Stinson and Travis Stinson.
A military graveside will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home and Memorial Park in the Garden of Avenue of Flags. Pastor Ryan Shaffer will be officiating.
