William Carlyle Dukes passed away on April 6, 2018 in Kingsport, TN at the age of 84.
Born in Penns Grove, NJ, Bill was a gifted student and athlete. He graduated from Salem High School and was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. An injury sidelined his football career there, and he transferred to Rutgers University in his home state, where he played his junior and senior years. He was active in ROTC and a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Chi Psi. During his 22 years in the US Army, he earned a graduate degree in political science from Columbia University, he served as a special forces officer in Vietnam, Japan, and Korea, and he served as a military liaison officer in East and West Germany.
Following retirement from the military, Bill lived in Fayetteville, NC where he was a college professor and a businessman. Friends will remember his sharp wit, and Fayetteville friends will remember him as The Rug Merchant, a loyal Rotarian, and a member of the Old Soldiers Club.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Carlyle Dukes, Sr and Beatrice Griffith Maul; his wife Maryam Dukes; and his sister, Nancy Brown.
He is survived by his son, Bill Dukes and wife Amy of Rhode Island; daughter, Katerina Neglia and husband Chris of Kingsport, TN; and 5 grandchildren, Ruby, Grace, Sophia, Sasha, and Joe.
An inurnment service will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
