William Carlyle Dukes passed away on April 6, 2018 in Kingsport, TN at the age of 84.
Born in Penns Grove, NJ, Bill was a gifted student and athlete. He graduated from Salem High School and was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During his 22 years in the US Army, he earned a graduate degree in political science from Columbia University, he served as a special forces officer in Vietnam, Japan, and Korea, and he served as a military liaison officer in East and West Germany.
Following retirement from the military, Bill lived in Fayetteville, NC where he was a college professor and a businessman. Friends will remember his sharp wit, and Fayetteville friends will remember him as The Rug Merchant, a loyal Rotarian, and a member of the Old Soldiers Club.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Carlyle Dukes, Sr and Beatrice Griffith Maul; his wife Maryam Dukes; and his sister, Nancy Brown.
He is survived by his son, Bill Dukes and wife Amy of Rhode Island; daughter, Katerina Neglia and husband Chris of Kingsport, TN; and 5 grandchildren, Ruby, Grace, Sophia, Sasha, and Joe.
An inurnment service will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
