William (Bill) Hershel Hammond, Jr., 72, went home to be with the Lord, on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol, TN, after a brief illness.
Bill was born in Gate City, VA, and grew up in Kingsport, TN. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1959 and The University of Tennessee in 1964 where he lettered two seasons in football. He served for six years in the U.S. Army reserves while embarking on a 33 year career at Eastman Kodak/Chemical. He was an active member of Tri-Cities Baptist Church. Post retirement, Bill enjoyed his family, his church, and a number of hobbies including buying and selling antiques and collectibles at the Haggle Shop in Downtown Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hershel and Lucille Quillen Hammond, and nephew, Dennis Nesaw.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Janice (Jan) Carrier Hammond; sons, Brad Hammond (Gloria) and Bart Hammond (Julianne); grandchildren, Peyton, Carson, Grayson and Eliza; sister, Betty Nesaw (Mike Hasman); mother-in-law, Norma Carrier; brother-in-law, Warren Widmyer (Bobbi); nephew, David Nesaw (Holly); nieces, Donna Nesaw, Amber Garland (James), Ginger Shifflett (Paul); great nieces and nephews, Nick and John Nesaw, Ruben and Nora Garland, Holly and Madison Shifflett; several cousins; special friends, Frances and Jerrold Pigg and Margaret Bedford.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Select Specialty Hospital and caregivers Beth Finch and Kaye Bellamy.
Memorials may be made to Touch Point Food Pantry, c/o Tri-cities Baptist Church, 171 Promise Land Drive, Gray, TN, 37615 or another charitable organization.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Mike Laughrun and Rev. Alan Williams officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Brent Herron, Brian Herron, Paul Shifflett, Joe Horne, Mark Blevins, Wayne Overbey, Walter S. Carrier and Raymond Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Henley, Claude Crawford, Verlin Overbay, Jim Fuller, Charles Chandler, Leon Rowan, James Garland, Nat Payne, Roger Babb, Earl Bishop, Keith Garland, Tom Pugh, Sam Potter, and all members of the Alan Williams Sunday School Class.
