William Harkins

William "Bill" Harkins passed away on May 11, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. Bill was born in Bristol, Tennessee on July 23, 1923.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Joan Meade Harkins, and by a son, Bob Harkins.

Bill lived in Kingsport and was a retired engineer from Eastman. He was a pilot, a golfer and a father, grandfather and great-grandfather who showed his children that serving others was of greater value than serving oneself.

He is survived by a son, Andy Harkins and wife Cay of Boone, NC; grandchildren Bert Harkins and wife Jeannie of Atlanta, Georgia, and Neil Harkins and wife Heather of Knoxville, Tennessee, Catharine Harkins Milner and husband James of Boone, NC, Lindsey Harkins Ray and husband Jacob of Boone, NC, Ashley Harkins and Emma Harkins--also of Boone, NC, and great-grandchildren Holly and Sydney Harkins of Atlanta, and Katie and Zoey Harkins of Knoxville, TN; sister, Ann Bingham, Kingsport, TN; and several nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday May 17, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson in Kingsport, and the funeral will be on Friday May 18 th at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Counts officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
