William Bill P. Haynes, Jr., 87, Kingsport, died Friday evening September 11, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Johnson City where he graduated from Science Hill High School. He attended Tennessee Polytechnical School later named Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, TN. Bill came to Kingsport in 1941 where he began work at Tennessee Eastman Company and where he retired in 1986 while working in Employee Benefits as the Employee Benefits Administrator. During his working career, he spent 20 years at Holston Defense Corporation.
Mr. Haynes was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. His hobbies were swimming, traveling, and volunteer activities where he was most active in recent years. Bill was a member of the Holston Valley Auxiliary, Contact Concern, the Shepherd's Center; and was Volunteer of the Year. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the Fraternal Order of the Elks where he had served as exalted ruler. Bill was also a member of American Legion Post 3/265. He served with the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II and from 1948 to 1950 he was a member of the Tennessee National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Ruth Haynes; and brother, Percy Haynes.
Surviving are his son, George W. Haynes of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Dr. Kelly Suzanne Haynes-Laraway and husband, Michael, of Cary, NC; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Taylor Laraway; and sister, Loraine Webster, of Johnson City, TN.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Mausoleum with Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. Entombment will follow at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Hammond Post 3/265 American Legion.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion Post 3/265 and the Tennessee National Guard.
