William Haynes Phillips

William Haynes Phillips, 82, Kingsport, died peacefully at 10:30 p.m. Friday night, August 17, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Haynes was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He served in the Korean War with the U. S. Army Engineers. He was formerly employed with Mead Corporation and Kingsport Power Company before working as a Statistician for Holston Defense Corporation for 33 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Beginning at the age of 14, Haynes developed a fascination with football statistics and for many years produced a widely circulated newsletter on probability and statistical predictability of high school football.

He wrote a book entitled "Round Robin Rithmetic" which looked at the consistency and predictability of high school round robin conferences around the country. For several years he contributed to the Kingsport Times-News' Major Hoople column on high school football predictions in Kingsport and East Tennessee.

His greatest love was spending time with his family. In addition, he was a longtime hiker and loved hiking the trails around Bays and Roan Mountains. He was a cartoonist and advocate for art and art education.

Haynes is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Phillips of the home; children, Denise Wilburn and husband Bill of Oak Ridge, Jan Allen and husband Britt of Kingsport, Carol Brown and husband Steve of Oakland, Florida, Kelly Phillips and wife Alicia of Johnson City, Scott Phillips of Anchorage, Alaska, Missy Graves and husband Anthony of Kingsport, and Anna Lisa Stanley and husband Cole of Edmond, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren, Amanda Allen Rigell, Ben Wilburn, Lauren Wright, Ashley Will Weseman, Emily Phillips, Max Phillips, Krista Graves, Hailey Graves, Isaiah Graves, Caleb Stanley, and Audrey Stanley; one great-grandson, Andrew Weseman; brother, Dr. Tom Phillips of Champaign, Illinois; and sister, Susan Carroll of Melbourne, Florida.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. with Marlin S. Jaynes, Minister and Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Kelly Phillips, Scott Phillips, Britt Allen, Anthony Graves, Max Phillips, and Bill Wilburn. Steve Brown will serve as honorary pallbearer.
