Willie Mae Gantt Sturkie, 82, of Kingsport, passed away on Monday, August 09, 2010, after a long illness.
Willie was originally from Columbia, SC, and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a business degree. She traveled around the world with her husband during his Army career. They retired to Florida in 1974, where Willie was employed as secretary to the Panama City Police Chief. She moved to Kingsport in 2005, where she was a member of First Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class.
Willie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Solon Sturkie; her parents, Otis LeGare and Callie Belle Jeffcoat Gantt; and her brother, Everett LeGare Gantt.
She is survived by her daughters, Kitty Beverly and husband, Gary, of Kingsport, and Julie Gordon and boyfriend, Michael Renken, of Panama City, FL; grandchildren, Aaron O'Conner and wife, Christine, Adam O'Conner and wife Jenny, Mike Beverly and wife, Tabra, Dr. Angie Patteson and husband Gant, Sr., and Jim Beverly and wife, Heather; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leon "Bobby" Gantt and wife, Iva Jean, of Columbia, SC; sister-in-law, Helen Gantt, Ohio.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will follow at 8:00, with Marlin S. Jaynes, Jr., minister and Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Susan Hoover will provide music.
Memorial donations in Willie's honor may be made to the church of one's choice.
